Wear Castings — Matched Sets

Mantle and Concave: Buy the Chamber, Not Two Separate Castings

A crushing chamber is a relationship between two profiles. Supplied separately, mantle and concave are castings; supplied as a matched set from the same profile family, they are a chamber whose geometry starts as designed — both profiles new, neither worn into the other's shape. Mantles and concaves are general catalogue lines — not recorded against the HP-series sizes, the GP series, Symons, the Metso family or the Sandvik family.

Bowl components for HP400 cone crusher
Bowl component for HP400, from the company catalogue — the bowl in this photograph is an HP400 catalogue component, recorded against the HP400 only; the bowl itself is not recorded against Symons, any other Metso-family size or the Sandvik family. The photograph shows a bowl component, not a mantle or concave; mantles and concaves are general catalogue lines, not recorded against the HP-series sizes, the GP series, Symons, the Metso family or the Sandvik family.

Why sets outperform singles

Every cone crusher operator has lived the alternative: a new mantle fitted against a half-worn concave. The profiles no longer correspond, so the chamber's nip zones and parallel zone sit in the wrong places. Setting must be closed down to hold top size, which raises power draw and recirculating load; or the setting stays and the product coarsens out of specification. Either way the new mantle wears into the old concave's geometry — spending its best steel becoming the wrong shape. A matched set eliminates the compromise: both profiles are new, the chamber is the geometry the designer intended, and wear proceeds evenly on both sides from a known starting point.

What 'matched' means in practice

A matched set from this programme means the mantle and concave are selected in the same chamber profile — coarse, medium, fine or extra-fine — cast in grades appropriate to the same duty, and specified as a pair so the two castings are fitted together on site. Where the application justifies it, the grades can be deliberately paired: a higher-hardening mantle grade against the concave grade that the wear pattern of the previous set recommends. That pairing conversation uses your data — feed, chamber, hours and tonnes achieved, and where each liner wore. The mantle and concave in this pairing are general catalogue lines — not recorded against the HP-series sizes, the GP series, Symons, the Metso family or the Sandvik family.

When a single is still right

Sets are the recommendation for planned, wear-driven change-outs. Singles remain correct for damage events: a cracked mantle mid-campaign, or a concave damaged by a tramp event while its partner is young. The individual pages for the mantle and the concave cover single-part ordering, and our article on when to replace mantle and concave gives the condition triggers that separate 'change the set' from 'change one piece'. If you describe the situation on the enquiry, the quotation will follow the honest route — set or single — rather than the larger sale.

Ordering sets

Quote the crusher model, chamber profile and original part numbers for both liners; add feed type and the life of the outgoing set for a grade recommendation. Minimum order is one set (or one piece for singles), confirmed with your quotation, as is the lead time — typically within 15 workdays in peak season for common profiles. Shipment on FOB, EXW, CIF or FCA terms; payment by T/T or L/C. For a specific machine, a set is supplied as a compatible replacement under the same pairing discipline — profile pair first, brand second. Mantles and concaves are general catalogue lines: no mantle or concave line is recorded against the HP-series sizes, the GP series, Symons, the Metso family or the Sandvik family, so a set for an HP-series, Symons, Metso-family or Sandvik-family machine is specified against the model and the original part numbers of both liners when quoted.

Commissioning a new set: the first-shift routine

A matched set earns its advantage in the first shift, if the plant gives it a measured start. Fit both liners on inspected seats, with the chamber clean and the feed arrangement checked — a set installed under a one-sided feed chute will wear in an arc no grade can prevent. Set the closed side setting to the plant standard and record it, then run the first production period at that setting and sample the product: gradation against specification is the set's birth certificate. Note the power draw at standard throughput as the second baseline. Those three records — setting, gradation, power — are the comparison points for the set's whole life; the week they begin drifting together is the week the next set should be ordered. Sets supplied from this programme are specified and supplied as pairs, identified against model and part numbers before dispatch — the mantle and concave in those sets are general catalogue lines, not recorded against the HP-series sizes, the GP series, Symons, the Metso family or the Sandvik family — so the first-shift routine starts from the intended geometry: what the plant measures from there is the truth about its own chamber, feed and duty.

Quotes are prepared against your model, part number or dimension drawing. Minimum order is 1 piece on most catalogue parts — like the current lead time, it is confirmed with your quotation (typically within 15 workdays in peak season and about one month in the off-season).
