Mechanical Spares — Drive Train

Crusher Gears: The Drive Train Between Motor and Eccentric

Power reaches the crushing chamber through a gear mesh: the countershaft pinion drives the large gear on the eccentric assembly, and that mesh turns motor rotation into the head's gyratory stroke. We supply cone crusher gears, drive gears and pinions. Two gear lines are recorded by size in the catalogue — the HP200 gear and the HP300 drive gear, recorded against those HP sizes only and not recorded against the GP series, Symons, any other Metso-family size or the Sandvik family — and the remaining gear lines, gear pinions and spiral bevel gears among them, are general catalogue lines, not recorded against the HP sizes, the GP series, Symons, any other Metso-family size or the Sandvik family, confirmed against the original part number.

The mesh that drives the crusher

The drive train of a cone crusher is short and heavily loaded: motor, countershaft, and then the gear mesh — a pinion on the countershaft driving the large gear of the eccentric assembly. Everything the chamber does is powered through those teeth, under shock loads that reverse with every tramp event and every chamber surge. That duty is why gear condition shows up first as sound — a whine under load that was not there last season — then as growing backlash, and finally as metallic debris in the oil. It is also why gears are assessed and replaced as a mesh, not as strangers: a new gear run against a worn mating gear inherits the worn gear's tooth profile errors, and the pair wears at the faster component's rate. The drive train's place in the machine is mapped in our tour of cone crusher components.

The recorded gear lines

Two gear lines stand on record by size. The catalogue lists a gear for the HP200 — and records that line's manufacturing process: the HP200 gear is a forged line. The catalogue separately lists the HP300 drive gear. Both lines are recorded against their HP sizes only: neither is recorded against the GP series, Symons, any other Metso-family size or the Sandvik family. The process discipline matters and is stated exactly as the catalogue states it: forging is recorded for the HP200 gear line; the HP300 drive gear entries record no process, so no process is claimed for that line here — the quotation confirms the manufacturing process and material for the specific part number quoted, because under crushing shock loads the process is part of the part.

Gear pinions and spiral bevel gears

Beyond the two recorded lines, the catalogue's gear spectrum lists a gear pinion for cone crushers and a spiral bevel gear for cone crushers. Those lines are general catalogue lines — not recorded against the HP sizes, the GP series, Symons, the Metso family or the Sandvik family — and a pinion or bevel gear for a specific machine is confirmed against the model and original part number when quoted. The same is true for the countershaft-side components the pinion runs with: countershafts and countershaft boxes are general catalogue lines under the spare parts programme, and a drive-train enquiry that covers gear, pinion and countershaft together gets one consistent identification pass instead of three partial ones.

Failure signs and ordering

Order against the signs, not the breakdown: whine under load, measured backlash growth, tooth flank pitting or scoring at inspection, and debris character changing in the return oil. When you enquire, state the mating component's condition alongside the gear you need — if the pinion is worn, the honest quotation covers the mesh. Identification is by crusher model and original part number, confirmed before production or dispatch. Minimum order is 1 piece, confirmed with your quotation, as is the lead time; gears produced to order carry their production time on the quote. Shipment on FOB, EXW, CIF or FCA terms; payment by T/T or L/C. Certificates available upon request.

Quote the mesh, not just the gear

State the gear you need and the condition of its mating component alongside it — if the pinion is worn, the honest quotation covers the mesh. Identification is by crusher model and original part number, confirmed before production or dispatch. Minimum order is 1 piece, confirmed with your quotation, as is the lead time (typically within 15 workdays in peak season and about one month in the off-season).
